Curtis High School’s Varsity Softball Team had a great season, with the girls coming in second place in their division and entering the playoffs as the third-ranked team in the city
The team won a total of 11 games during the regular season. Of the 11 wins, seven were mercies, which means the team was ahead by 20 runs after completing three innings or by 15 after four innings or ten runs after five. Junior Maya Scheffler pitched 60 innings and ended the season with an impressive 69 strikeouts. This season’s team was led by seniors Lily Mackta, Julia Barrett, Ava Cheripinsky, Ava Riccardi, Caroline White, and Alayna Marrero. Both their offense and defense remained strong throughout the season, allowing them to dominate both sides of the plate.
The Warrior’s winning streak would sadly come to a close in a tough extra inning loss in the semi-finals. For the last three seasons, the team has ended their playoff run with a loss to Scholars Academy.
The game stretched to over two hours and nine innings. Maya Scheffler, Nina Benedetto, and Lily Mackta would be key players in this final game, with Scheffler gaining the advantage for the team several times, pushing the score to 3 to 1 during the eighth inning. Lily Mackta would go 3 to 5 at the plate, amassing four stolen bases with the help of her teammates. By seven innings, the two teams were tied, which forced the game to go into extra innings. The game would come to a close as the Scholars scored in the ninth inning.
The softball team was one of the few spring sports that made it this far in the playoffs. Coach McNamara is proud of the team’s skill, saying that “the season was a great experience. Every single player contributed to our team’s success while having fun along the way.”
Topping off their amazing season, Coach McNamara won her hundredth game as the Curtis Warriors varsity softball coach. They’re great representations of what real Warriors are, and bring fire to the Curtis athletic field. A lot of hard work, determination, and passion is put into their games. The softball team continues to stand out and make everyone proud.
