The Curtis Robotics team returned to the 2024 SeaPerch competition on April 13th. Last year, the team went home with second place in the mission course, one of the two arenas that the robots have to endure. Having only seven available members this year meant that the Warriors would have to work even harder for success, especially when pitted against Staten Island Tech, the only other SI school in attendance.
The team entered three robots into the aquatic competition, with two people controlling each one. The challenge of controlling the robots through two complex underwater courses; the mission course and the obstacle course, required one person to be the navigator, pointing out obstacles and giving directions, while the other was the driver. Two of the three robots would be entered into the stock class, which had stricter requirements for robots. The cost of constructing the robot had to be under 35 dollars, and it could only have three motors to support itself, so the team had to keep their designs simple and effective. The open class, however, allowed for all sorts of modifications with no cost or modification limit.
Briseida Mendez and Noor Syar were the driving team for the first stock class robot, while Junior Mohammad Mohibbullah and Sophomore Rey Castillo drove the other. The open class robot would be driven by Junior Jose Torres, with navigators Angeline Collado and Jia Jing Zhang switching places as navigators for the obstacle and mission course.
The Warriors went home with second place in the open class. The team faced their fair share of challenges along the way, but they plan on using this experience to take home first place next year.
