The basketball season has officially come to an end and the girls junior varsity team had an amazing season. They had ten straight wins and no losses throughout the regular season, making it all the way to the championships. Janiya Thomas, team captain, says, “The key to our long successful season is the sisterhood we created and how we came together as a team. For example, when someone is down we lift them up, we win and lose as a team. We start and finish as a team.” This sense of community is reflected in all of their wins, and contributed in their journey to the championship. Player Aniyah Bell, said, “I feel really good about how far the team has come. We clicked really well together from the start and I’m so glad to be here with them.”
Although they didn’t win the championship against South Shore, there were many high points and accomplishments throughout the season. Bell says, “I am most proud of how far we came and how we made it to the championship together.” Player Anayah Earpes added, “We get to have fun and it’s a great experience.” The team demonstrated that when you’re a close knit group and play with passion, you will have amazing results.
Thomas pointed out that there were, “No doubts because we know we will put our all in win or lose. Against Tottenville we were down by 20 in the first half, and came together as a team to win by three. That was the start of the season, that really proved to us that when we come together and play as a team, we are unstoppable.” Next season, we all hope that they pull through again and continue their winning streak. Earpes predicts, “We’re gonna make it to the championships again.” The girls are confident that they are a powerful force and will come back stronger. Good luck next year, Warriors!
