The boys varsity volleyball team received a new coach, Carolina Alfonso.
Prior to Curtis, she had been the coach for LaGuardia’s team. During her time there, she led the team to the semifinals. “This is my second year coaching and my journey so far has been both rewarding and inspiring.”
“During my first year, I had the incredible opportunity to coach at LaGuardia where my team’s dedication and hard work took us all the way to the semifinals. It was an exciting and unforgettable experience in my very first year as a coach. That season reinforced my passion for coaching and showed me the impact I could have on my players both on and off the court. I am eager to bring that same energy, commitment, and drive to help my team reach its full potential.”
“My passion for volleyball started in high school, where I fell in love with the game, the teamwork, and the challenge of constantly improving. That passion carried me to the next level, where I had the incredible opportunity to play Division 1 college volleyball. Now, as a coach, I want to inspire and develop the next generation of athletes, helping them build confidence, discipline, and a love for the sport—just as my coaches did for me.
Alfonso also has a hefty and rigorous set of expectations for her players, “this season, I expect growth, dedication, and a strong sense of teamwork. My goal is to create an environment where athletes push themselves to improve every day—physically, and mentally—while also developing a deep passion and love for the game.” She included, “I want to see my team embrace challenges, support one another, and compete with passion and confidence. Success isn’t just about wins and losses; it’s about the progress we make, the lessons we learn, and the relationships we build along the way. I’m excited to watch my players develop their skills, grow as individuals, and create lasting memories together. I want this season to be one they’ll always be proud of.”
Last season was rough with the team plagued by injuries, so Coach Alfonso might be just the motivation the boys varsity volleyball team needs to get back up.
