Since the year 1946 on the eve of Thanksgiving, St. Peter’s Eagles and the Curtis Warriors have competed against each other in a legendary game of basketball, shaking the foundations of the island. This year was no different. Upon entering the gym of College of Staten Island, the energy could be immediately felt by players, cheerleaders and fans alike. Everyone comes to see this game, students, alumni and even the staff of the schools come by to witness this event.
The Warriors knew this game was going to be tough and preparation was needed to take on the St. Peter’s Eagles. Before the tip off, the energy in the building mounted as everyone waited for the game to start and once it did, it didn’t disappoint. From the beginning tip off to the final buzzer, the game was filled with nonstop, fast-paced action with everyone giving it their all. The players rushed down from one side of the court to the other trying to score a basket or prevent the others from doing so. The cheerleaders danced their hearts out during halftime and put all their energy into the cheers. The fans supported the team with their cheers during the game embracing the spirit of this tradition.
The Warriors put up a strong fight, with stand out players being Alonzo Archbold, Ethan Kaminsky, and Jason Dixon. Archbold blocked multiple shots and scored a total of 14 points. Ethan Kaminsky scored 9 points, 5 of which were from the foul line. Lastly Jason Dixon was able to keep Warrior possession with 7 rebounds. However, being a young team, they ultimately lost to the Eagles 64-37. Despite all of that, it was a pleasure for both schools to continue a legendary tradition that will hopefully continue for many more years to come. “Over the years, the alumni base has grown, and it is always a time when alumni are back from college or those who live in other parts of the country come back home to be with family and that is a tradition that has stood the test of time – over 70 years. Both teams have been at the top of their respective standings for the better part of 30 years so it’s always good to see the two teams square off at the beginning of the season and to see where they are at the end,” said Coach Dwayne Archbold.
