Girls’ Volleyball Team makes it to Playoffs
Close game against Tech ends playoff run.
The Curtis High School’s girls varsity volleyball team remarkably made it to the playoffs this year along with several other Curtis teams. They moved up a rank and had a winning season with a record of 8-6, compared to 7-7 last year. For her first season as coach it couldn’t have been sweeter. Carla Sigona’s team made a playoff run for the first time in four years.
Gabby Novak, a senior on the team, saw Ms. Sigona as more than just a coach, she was a friend. “She had the ability to unleash our inner beasts and get us pumped before games. When she left, the team was heartbroken, but she was moving on to better things, so I was happy for her.” Sigona was offered a full time teaching job and the head varsity lacrosse coaching job at Brooklyn Tech. The coach for next years team has not been named but all of the girls graduating believe that whoever it is will lead the team to victory.
Josephine Sanabria and Chermae Gonzales, the captains of the team, were leaders on the court and the sidelines, leading their team to many wins. In the team’s opinion the playoff game was by far the best. Each and every girl left it all on the court and even though they lost they were thrilled to have made it that far. Noreen Donnelly, a senior on the team, said, “making it to playoffs was amazing because it’s been a while since Curtis has made it. We only made it to the first round and lost a close game against Brooklyn Tech. Even though I’m graduating this year, I think next year’s team is going to kill it, they’re very hard working girls and have so much talent. Playing volleyball was one of the best things I was apart of in school and I’m going to miss it so much after I leave.”
