The Knitting Club will be donating handmade hats to babies born prematurely, otherwise known as ‘preemies’. The hats will be donated to Staten Island University Hospital and Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC).
This campaign was inspired by Mrs. Russo’s daughter, who received an orange knitted hat for Halloween. Ms. Russo felt inspired by this and decided to begin donating handmade hats to preemies in the NICUs. Mrs. Russo’s goal is to have 200 hats by January 17th of 2025. So far, they have about 40% of this hefty goal completed, and hope to complete it by the end of the school year.
The students in the Knitting Club aren’t the only ones making an effort towards this goal. Teachers, students, and families in the Curtis community have been contributing and offering their help. They may not know how to knit, but they’re donating supplies, such as needles and yarn, to help the club. Mrs. Russo personally has never made a baby hat until now. She states she has four hats done, and they take about three hours each to make. Anyone that would like to help the cause can go to 322, during 10th period on Tuesdays. She also wants to thank all the people helping her and the knitting club for donating to such an important cause.
