Ms. Naime Velovic, the new assistant principal of the social studies department, will be starting her new position on January 29th, the beginning of the spring semester at Curtis.
Having spent her childhood in Staten Island, Ms. Velovic has a bachelor’s degree in history education from College of Staten Island, a masters in special education and post-masters in school leadership, both from Toro University.
She has been teaching for eight years, with her teaching career beginning at Curtis High School as a student teacher in 2016, and continued here after developing a fondness for the school. Currently, Ms. Velovic teaches IB Government & Economics for seniors, and taught AP World History for sophomores. Having taught two different grades, she has developed a connection with the students that speak to her effective teaching style, an appropriate quality for someone in her new position.
Ms. Velovic expressed that she plans on making Curtis more “culturally aware”. She envisions organizing more history nights, similar to Curtis’ STEM Nights, as a way to bring students together to share their ethnic identities or favorite history topics. She along with Ms. Ago have even started Balkan Club, in her journey to bring in more cultural clubs to Curtis.
As she transitions to her role and makes changes for the better, Ms. Velovic also expressed how she is glad to see Ms. Aversa’s contributions to the school continue despite her retirement, namely the Curtis Closet, a school donation center providing clothes for all students for any occasion.
Curtis High School welcomes Ms. Velovic into her new position and is eager for this new chapter not only in her career, but in the community as a whole!
