During Curtis’s Spirit Week, students celebrate Warrior pride by participating in activities related to the school’s sports teams, wearing school colors, and competing in special spirit week contests. Spirit Week is usually held the week before homecoming, but any week of the year can be used. While School Spirit Week is a lot of fun, coming up with creative ideas every year can be a challenge. One part of School Spirit Week that students enjoy the most is dressing according to a different theme each day. The more creative the theme is, the more fun it is.

Curtis High School’s first Spirit day was on Monday, October 25th, which was “Pajama day”. Students loved the chance to roll out of bed and wear their PJs all day. As they say, “After all, what’s more comfortable than curling up in comfy pajamas with a good book?”. Curtis students showed up with the cutest or fiercest PJs they owned and showed them off while admiring everyone else’s. It gave them another reason to look forward to school. As Curtis students, teacher, and staff walked in, all we could see was onesies, regular two-piece pajamas, a robe and slippers, etc. Frank Barrance, who teaches A/V and Broadcast Journalism said, “I choose a bathrobe, a t-shirt, and sweatpants. My other PJs, (Colorful teddy bear print PJs) were in the wash so I didn’t get to wear those.  And I chose the bathrobe because it would keep me warm as I walked around the school. The bathrobe is not a usual part of my Pajamas.” 

On Tuesday, “Twin day”. While Twins Day ideas are plentiful, one idea that Curtis and other schools came up with is simply to have students dress similarly or identically. There are no funky costumes or outrageous ideas required if going over the top is not specified. Students can simply choose a friend and match up their wardrobes for items that look nearly identical or go together. Two participants, Arely Moran and Ashley Yanis, said, “we’ve been best friends for years now and we’ve picked up on each other’s styles throughout time. So since we do shopping together at times, we had similar outfits we could match with on Twin Day. It’s our senior year and we want to make the best of it!” 

On Wednesday we had a new spirit day called “Anything but a bag day” at Curtis which I personally thought was a great idea, to have students more entertained about spirit week and school. Seeing students with other items than their bag was amazingly creative like; shoebox, picnic baskets, laundry baskets, Laundry bags, cereal boxes, icebox coolers, Home depot buckets, suitcases, baby pram, etc. There was this one girl, Shaquana Mecca Lucas, who got the entire school’s attention by bringing a laundry cart. She told us that, “I originally had a shopping cart but it was way too big so the next option was a laundry basket and I was allowed in the elevator all day but the hardest part was going on the field when the fire  drill went off.” 

For “Throwback Day,” students enjoyed wearing clothing trends of the past, choosing one decade to celebrate the occasion. Margo Salomons, grade 12, said “I decided to do the 70s disco era because I always loved the music and felt like it was an era people didn’t really do for the spirit week often. To me, spirit week is a time where the school collaborates and is able to have fun.”

For the last day of Spirit week we had “Curtis Apparel Day”, the day where we all got to show off our best merchandise from head to toe. Curtis Warriors once again showed up with maroon and white to show and spread the appreciation of Curtis High School. Last year Curtis didn’t have a Spirit week because of the pandemic which was a big disappointment. But that didn’t stop us from showing up to Curis this year representing the maroon and white warrior colors. It didn’t matter if you had one piece of merch on, it only mattered if you were showing the pride of a true Curtis Warrior.
