Towards the end of every year for the past 10 years, students of the arts at Curtis are celebrated for their artistic talents at the Georgies. This ceremony was named after writer and activist George Curtis, who our school is named after as well. Every year since its inception, 75 of Curtis’ artistic Warriors have rocked the Staten from 5 to 9, dancing the night away. However, before the dancing could begin, the seniors would first be awarded for all their hard work and talent. This year was a very special year for the Georgies, as Senior Chrysangel Tejada made history getting the very first award of the ceremony for her time in the Visual Arts house, despite her IB Career being in computer science. After Chrysangel received her award, it was time for the celebrations of each house to begin.
Mr. Profilio started off the award ceremony by welcoming all of his seniors to the center of the room with open arms. Each senior received an award in excellence in their respective subject and a cool key chain as well. After Mr. Profilio, it was Mr. Barranca’s turn to give awards to his seniors. Mr. Barranca wrote parting messages for each of his seniors, praising their commitment as students and their kindness outside of the classroom. Next up was Ms. Napolitano, and she got creative for her seniors. She asked Chat GPT to write a poem about all of her seniors, regarding their grace and talent as dancers. Up last and certainly not least was Ms. Fugate, and her message to her seniors was entertaining. The majority of the seniors in the theater program were in the play, so Ms. Fugate rewrote the song Mamma Mia to apply to her seniors and it had the entire room laughing extremely hard.
Once the award ceremony was over it was eating time, courtesy of the Staten’s very generous staff. On the menu they had a chicken dish or a steak dish for the students to choose from, on top of drinks, bread, and a delicious dessert. Finally after all of the food and awards were given, it was time to party. Every student got up and danced their hearts out until the event ended. The party was some of the most fun the students had in a long while, and they all deserved it after a long year. The artistic minds at Curtis are wonderful, and after all of their hard work, everyone can look forward to the Georgies at the end of the year.
