The 2024 blood drive was held in honor of science teacher Ms. Che, who is currently battling leukemia. Eighty pints of blood were collected over the course of November 21.There is a chance that blood will be donated to Ms. Che, but if not, we are still wishing for her health and safe recovery. “Although the NYBC does supplement MSK hospital, there is no guarantee,” Nursing department coordinator Ms. Fasano said.
Why is it important to donate blood? Josmey Vasquez, a nursing student, said, “I think it’s important to donate blood because there’s a lot of people that are struggling with illnesses and the only thing that keeps them alive is blood transfusions. A lot of times there isn’t a lot of blood available, so you’re saving lives.” Ms Fasano, says, “It is important for the Nursing department to help the community with the blood shortage.” As she encourages and delivers this event with the help of her students, many lives are being impacted.
How does donating positively affect others? Nursing student Uniqua Williams says, “Donating positively affects others because as she said you’re saving lives. It could make you feel really good knowing that fact, you’re changing people’s lives.” Donating blood is crucial because of those we’re helping and with hope, saving.
It’s a wonderful feeling when everyone wants to donate, but there are some requirements you have to meet. You need to be sixteen or older, have proof of your date of birth, parental consent if you’re under 18, and be clear of sicknesses or certain diseases. If you’re interested in contributing to organizations like these, Uniqua added, “You can go to your local community center as well as a health center, that could be set up really anywhere. To get more information from there you can go to a hospital as well.” We thank everyone who participated in this year’s blood drive and aim to continue positively affecting the lives of others.
As of February, Ms. Che will be taking an extended leave. The Curtis Log and Curtis community are praying for her recovery.
