On November 19th to 27th, 2024, the Environmental Club held their most recent Climate Action Campaign, focused on the theme of waste. This year, they collected used paper throughout Curtis classrooms to shred and recycle into colorful ‘Thank-you’ cards for all teachers and staff in honor of Thanksgiving. Each card featured its own unique pun, customized for the teacher receiving it. The campaign began with a bake sale on the 19th, with the profits put aside for Environmental Club’s upcoming sustainable events. Mr. Crowdell, a mathematics teacher, shared that “It’s always nice to be told our hard work is appreciated here at Curtis.” Overall, the campaign proved to be a resounding success.
Club members had spent weeks brainstorming ideas, and decided on targeting one form of waste that every class is increasingly guilty of: paper waste. Such a process had been extensive; Daniela Garcia, a member of the club, said “It took over a month of organizing, collecting the paper, shredding, blending, drying, and decorating to ultimately distribute it.” However, this collaborative process went much smoother as a direct result of the Environmental Club having grown in size, going from 15 people last year to 25 this year. This growth promises a bright future for the club and their impact on the sustainability of Curtis.
