Curtis has been an important part of the Staten Island community for years, and the best example of this is the Curtis swimming pool. While also serving students, the pool’s benefits also extend to community members, supporting numerous programs and activities, according to Ms. Rossi. Given the limited number of pools on Staten Island, this facility is a valuable resource and provides good opportunities for sports, recreation, and swimming education.
Outside organizations like the PSAL utilize the pool to conduct swim meets and daily practices. Once the season for girls and boys swim is over, the New York City Parks and Recreation Department borrow the pool for swim tests for the lifeguard training program. They also use the pool to run ‘Learn to Swim’ and the Big Apple Games, both being programs that teach and encourage swimming skills in young children.
Being a student of P.S 44, 7 year old Royal Comissiong is one of many making use of the pool through the Learn to Swim program. “It was nice the first time,” he said, “I felt shy but they helped me and taught me about swimming and going in the water and going in the deep end. They help you practice.” Royal’s mother, Tabitha Romano, was made aware of the program through his school, and she is “glad that he had the opportunity to use the pool and swim.”
The pool being open is a convenient recreational option for those who don’t have access to their own backyard, supporting physical health and fitness while also strengthening the community bonds.
